What You Need To Know

  • Cold temperatures are in place
  • Areas of snow continue into Saturday
  • Gusty winds will create low visibility at times
  • We may see hazardous conditions along the I-90 and side streets

Those who will be especially impacted are south of the city of Buffalo. Up to a foot of snow will fall in isolated lake-effect snow belts. In surrounding suburbs, we expect 5-9 inches of snow. This isn’t snow that will shut down the city, but it will require some shoveling.

Winter weather alerts as of Friday evening.

If you travel east along the I-90 from Buffalo, you’ll run into more winter weather. Lake snow will also impact Wayne and Cayuga Counties. Three to six inches of snow will lead to rough conditions on the road.

Spots like Syracuse and surrounding counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory. Three to six inches will bring hazardous conditions there, as well.

Way up north of Syracuse, toward Saranac Lake and the Tug Hill region, more Winter Storm Warnings are in place.

We expect more impressive snow totals as lake-effect moves in off of Lake Ontario. Four to 10 inches of snow are possible for most, while areas in the highest elevations could see over a foot!

Just like in Buffalo, you’ll need snow blowers and shovels as well as a lot of patience. Roads will become slick, and especially in rural spots, winds will create serious drifts.

Anywhere across the state, remember to utilize your winter weather driving skills. Keep your headlights or flashers on, drive at a reasonable speed, make sure to have a snowbrush on hand and an emergency kit in the car.

Following the rules of the road will ensure that you and your family stay safe after the Thanksgiving holiday.
